The Tribulation, the Saints, the Rapture

Charles Ryalls 04-23-13
For a number of years there has been a raging debate about when the Lord would return. Actually this subject goes back to the Lord and His Disciples who were even then asking, “what will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?” It seemed like after 1948 and the very significant event of the re-establishment of Israel as a nation it became obvious that the subject of the tribulation and the Lords return was something that actually should be looked at in depth. Since that time a number of opinions have been generated some actually going back even to the late 1800’s. Some of the theories have been; there is no rapture, or at the end of the age after Armageddon, before the tribulation begins, after the tribulation, before the wrath of God, and all have presented their own take on the scriptures. But as always there really is only one truth, one correct answer. That answer must come from the scriptures in their most literal and straight-forward-interpretation. So let’s look at that now.

I will begin this discussion by saying that there can be no better testimony than the words of Yeshua himself concerning when he would return and the signs to look for. Anything that comes from modern church prophets, or gematria, ELS codes or other alternative ways of viewing scripture should be set aside especially if they do not agree with the simple text given by the Lord.. Also the prophecies of the old testament would have to agree with the words of Yeshua and if we understand it correctly they do and that verifies that we have a correct understanding.

So we will start with the ‘hang out’ of all those interested in the study and mystery of the return of Messiah and the Rapture of the church which is Matthew 24, the Olivet Discourse. When did Yeshua say that the Saints, the believers in Yeshua be taken to be with Him?

Matt 24: MT 24: [21] For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. [22] And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened. . . .29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: [30] And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. [31] And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

After the tribulation is the simple answer. Not before the tribulation like so many popular preachers tell it. And by the way, they have become both very popular and very rich teaching this pre-tribulation-rapture-theory. And what else would you expect. People have always been happy to pay others to tell them what they want to hear. But Yeshua said it very clearly after the Great Tribulation.

God always provided special signs to announce a special event like this and the sign given here is the Sun and Moon become darkened. It is just like in the Exodus, after the tribulations of those days and before the final judgment, the sun and moon became dark. Before Yeshua died on the cross the Sun was darkened for three hours. In the book of Joel the signs of the period commonly called the “Church age” are given to us. The Apostle Peter on Shavuot quoted Joel’s prophecy indicating a fulfillment and the beginning of the church age. Here we see the beginning of the Church age with the pouring out of the Spirit of God and the end marked by the darkening of the Sun and Moon.

JOEL 2:28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: [29] And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. [30] And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. [31] The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

And there are other places as well like Isaiah 24: [20] The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. [21] And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. [22] And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited. [23] Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

So… Yeshua has given us a series of events to watch for that will precede his return and the rapture of the believers.

MT 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? [4] And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. [5] For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. [6] And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. [7] For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. [8] All these are the beginning of sorrows. [9] Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. [10] And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. [11] And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many: [21] For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. [22] And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.

MT 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: [30] And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. [31] And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Now let’s look at what John says in the Revelation.

REV 6:1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. [2] And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. [3] And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. [4] And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. [5] And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. [6] And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. [7] And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. [8] And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. [9] And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: [10] And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? [11] And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled. [12] And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; [13] And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. [14] And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. [15] And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; [16] And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: [17] For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

If we compare these two passages we see thy are saying the same thing. For clarity I will interlace them for you.

Matt 24: . [5] For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Rev 6: [2] And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conque (the antichrist)

Matt 24: [31] And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Rev 7: (We are still in the sixth seal) . [9] After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; . . .[13] And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? [14] And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Now some preachers and prophecy teachers will tell you that this is the second coming not the Rapture which is a secret event that happens before the tribulation. However there is no scriptural support for that position at all. Some will say that Paul revealed it later after the ascension. Not true. Here is what Paul said. It is the same as what Yeshua said. If it had not been so then Paul would have been a false prophet.

Lets look first at the rapture and how it is connected to the resurrection of the righteous dead.

I cor 15: [20] But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. [21] For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. [22] For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. [23] But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.. . .
[51] Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, [52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. [53] For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

1 Thes 4: [15] For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. [16] For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: [17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. [18] Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

The dead in Christ are raised up first and then after that those who are His and who remain alive will be caught up with them to the Lord, at the Last Trumpet when the Angles shall gather us to the Lord. Exactly like the Lord himself said in the Olivet.
In his second letter to the brothers in Thesalonica he reviews what he had already told them. Some had concerns that the day of the Lord had already come in some sort of secret rapture like is so popular today and Paul reassures them that there is no secret Rapture and that before we are taken to be with the Lord that there will first be 1. a great Apostasy, just as the Lord had said, and 2. the man of sin, the Antichrist would be revealed.
2TH 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, [2] That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. [3] Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; [4] Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
Our popular pre-tribulation preachers throw up a hand and say, whoa, wait a minute, none of this can happen as long as the spirit filled church is here on Earth because that is what holds it all in check. And they quote the following verses.
2 Thes 2 [5] Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? [6] And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. [7] For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. [8] And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
But this is wrong in two ways. First Paul never says that the Church is the restrainer. In fact he never really does identify this restrainer at all. It could be the Arch Angel Michael, or God himself but we don’t know who or what it is. But we know it isn’t the Church, that is a certainty. Because it would be impossible for the church to be removed as a restraining force, to allow a great apostasy take place and the Antichrist to be revealed before the church can be removed. You can’t make the Rapture of the church dependent upon it’s having already been raptured.

Not only this but Chapter 2 of this letter actually follows chapter 1 in which Paul has already told them that he himself will not enter into God’s rest, until the Lord comes and we all are gathered together at his very obvious second coming in Glory and power!

2 Thes 1: [7] And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, [8] In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: [9] Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; [10] When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

So we can see CLEARLY that all the scriptures agree both Old and New testaments, both Yeshua and the disciples, that the Church and all the righteous both living and dead are gathered together after the tribulation and before Yeshua brings the wrath of God against the enemies of God and the beast empire.

After the sun and moon are darkened, the Lord appears in the heavens and everyone will see Him and call out to the rocks to fall on them and hide them from the face of Him who sits upon the throne, for they know the day of His wrath has come and no one will be able to stand, to justify themselves. In the scriptures it says that the church is not appointed to wrath.

1Thes 5: [9] For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, [10] Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

We are not appointed to the wrath of God. No we have been redeemed by the blood of Yeshua. We will be removed before the wrath of God is poured out on the wicked. Let’s look at the Old testament.

ISA 26:20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. [21] For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

The wrath of God is not the same as the Tribulation. The Church will be here for the Great Tribulation just as Yeshua told us. But only the 144000 special sealed witnesses from the twelve tribes of Israel will stand on the Earth with Messiah during the wrath of God. However I believe that those who have faith and refuse the mark of the beast will have help from God to endure those things. Yet Many will come to be martyred and will be among that multitude before the throne in Rev 6 (at the 5th seal) waiting patiently for the rest of their brothers who are to be killed for their testimony to also be killed. But not all. Paul said there will be some that survive and they will be gathered up after the dead in Christ as first raised up, when the Lord comes.

At the beginning of this paper we were looking at the seals. The seals start with the coming of Antichrist when he brokers a peace agreement with Israel and her enemies which also marks the beginning of that last week of Daniel’s 70 weeks, the seven year covenant of death. And the 6th seal is the end of the tribulation and with we have the resurrection and Rapture of the believers and the sealing of a first fruits of the faithful Jews 144,000 witnesses who stand with Christ during the wrath of God and Armageddon. But to be clear, the trumpets and bowl judgments do not follow in a step by step progression from one to the next 21 in all. Actually the trumpets and bowls connect and cover the same events only looking from different perspectives. In both the trumpets and the bowls we have seas turning to blood, rivers and fresh water turning to blood, plagues of heat and drought, sores, and the opening of the way for the battle of Armageddon. These things are not duplicated. They happen once. But one view, the trumpets shows us what the unsaved world will experience while bowls seem to be specific to what the effects will be to the beast and the beast empire. Seals are the guide for what the Church will experience. And some of these trumpet and bowl judgments will be taking place during the same time the seals are opening. The events of the Trumpets and Bowls are a mixture of Great Tribulation events and the Wrath of God. The closer you are connected to the Beast Empire the more severe the judgments are like the concentric rings of destruction around a nuclear blast. The beast empire is ground Zero.

There is a point in time where all of these judgments can be synchronized together and that is at the end of the Tribulation when the Sun and Moon are darkened. This celestial event is that time locking point.
In the sixth seal, we see the Sun and Moon darkened.

And then in the 4th Trumpet we have this: And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

And in the Bowl Judgments we have this: The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the
throne of the beast, and his kingdom was plunged into darkness.

After each of these judgment types are finished and the darkening of the sun and moon takes place, what follows is the final battle Armageddon.
Trumpets: T6. Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates… [16] And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand:

Bowls: The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East…to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty…[16] And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

The seal, Trumpets and Bowls run Parallel to one another not as a series.

The same stories are repeated in Rev 12-14 picking up the language and imagery of Daniel’s visions and covering the events even from the birth of Messiah Yeshua and the attempts of Satan to kill him..

The sequence of end time events are not impossible to understand if we remember that the same information if being given at different times through different characters. But the plan does not change. The Church WILL be here on Earth through the time known as the beginning of sorrows, and through the Great Tribulation and then moved out of the way before the wrath of God is poured out on the wicked. This is what all the scriptures say. This is what Yeshua said and Paul said. And it seems we are very, very close to seeing these things take place. If your preacher or minister has been telling you not to worry and to just be ready to be zapped out of here at any second in a pre-tribulation rapture, then he is deceived and needs to read the scriptures again. You need to see for yourself what the scriptures say. Ask the Lord to open your heart and eyes. Look at his words. Over and over we are admonished to prepared, don’t fall asleep, be ready to endure these horrible times. We are told to watch for these things the signs, the coming of the apostasy and the antichrist and be prepared to endure to the end and not to faint, not to loose our faith and not to take our eyes off of the prize, which is Yeshua. Why would he admonish us to be prepared if we were not going to be here in the first place? We are no better no more blessed than all those who suffered for the Gospel throughout the ages. Even in this day hundreds of thousands of Christians are killed each year for their faith. Are we somehow exempt and more blessed because we believe in a pre-tribulation rapture? Certainly not. In the end all the world will hate every one of us and those who kill us will believe they are doing service to God. Even member of our own families will hate us and revile us. Are we preparing ourselves for these tribulation times by singing songs about an imaginary pre-tribulation rapture that is not even found in scripture? My brothers, the time is quickly coming when you will have to stand in faith and do battle against principalities and powers in the spirit world. Your very life is on the line.

Hey there “Me”. Maybe you could share a little about who you are as I do not think I have met you yet. The idea of Zombies seems a bit strange at first. I am not sure why so many people are concerned about Zombies. But there is a place where just such a creature might fit into the end times. The 5th Trumpet in Rev 9 some sort of Alien creature from the bottomless pit attacks men for 150 days. These are demonic and connected possibly to the so called Alien presence. The bottomless pit does not have to be a pit in the earth. It may very well be a pit, or void, like a black hole in space, or some sort of dimensional rift. When it comes to Revelation we need to think in terms of Aliens to some extent because the forces we are fighting when bound in the Ariel place, in the atmosphere, and are the fallen angels of Gen 6, who are able to present themselves in many forms.
